Cape Kidnappers & Gannets

Cape Kidnappers, home of the Australasian Gannet. Getting to the Cape is half the fun. You can either walk via the beach at times of low tide or use the various means of commercial transport along the beach. Access by beach is undertaken by commercial tourism operators licensed by the Department of Conservation.

The Cape Kidnappers Gannet Reserve is managed by the Department of Conservation for the purpose of protecting the gannet nesting sites.
The 13 hectare reserve includes the Saddle and Black Reef gannet colonies. Both are closed to public access, however the Black Reef colony can be viewed from the beach. The Plateau colony is the main place for viewing the nesting gannets where there are also good panoramic views from this elevated headland.
There are spectacular geological cliff formations on the coast to Cape Kidnappers.

Travel along the majestically rugged coastline of Cape Kidnappers to the worlds largest most accessible Gannet nesting site.

Depart on the days low tide by tractor and trailer with local experienced guides. Narrative stops are made to view the fascinating geological history and earthquake fault lines.

Sit on a cushioned trailer, pulled by a unique vintage tractor, and enjoy the fresh open air travelling along the beach at the base of the towering cliffs.

Approximately one and a half hours at Cape Kidnappers leaves ample time for a swim, picnic or a scenic 25 minute walk to view the Saddle, Plateau colonies and extensive view of Hawke's Bay. On the return journey, a brief stop is made at the Black Reef Colony. This is the largest of the four gannet colonies at Cape Kidnappers.

The tour operates in all weather conditions. Suitable footwear and clothing is required - eg. hat and sunscreen for sunny days, and light rain jacket or wet weather gear for wet days. Guests are welcome to bring their own refreshments. Lunches, and morning and/or afternoon teas can be arranged for group bookings (at an additional cost).

Fitness ability requirement is moderate. The walk to the lighthouse and upper Gannet colonies is optional. Viewing the Gannets from the trailer deck is guaranteed with a compulsory stop at the Black Reef Colony on the beach.

Drive along the scenic coast from Napier to Te Awanga and join Gannet Safaris Overland to visit the worlds largest, most accessible gannet colony at Cape Kidnappers, New Zealand.

Gannet Safaris has been guiding visitors over Cape Kidnappers for over 35 years. Our safaris are the only way to be driven right to within a few feet of these remarkable birds. There is absolutely no walking required.

You will travel in comfort in our air conditioned 4 x 4 wheeled vehicles, through Cape Kidnappers Station - traversing riverbeds, broad rolling pastures, through stands of native bush, steep gullies and breathtaking inclines. There is a stop on the way at a spectacular cliff top with panoramic views of Hawke Bay right across to the Mahia Peninsula. The amazing geology of the area can also be taken in.

The 36km, three hour trip includes a commentary by your tour guide / driver on the farming operation on Cape Kidnappers Station and an introduction to the gannets.

On arrival at the gannets you can stretch your legs and take in the mouthwatering scenery from your position at the brink of the cliffs edge - 100 metres above the ocean. Here your driver / guide will serve you refreshments whilst you enjoy watching the gannets perform around you.
